History and construction

Studies have revealed that the Dazu Rock Carvings go as far back as 650 AD. The work began during the rule of Tang Dynasty. But it was in 9th century that most of the carvings were etched on the walls of the caves. Wei Junjing was responsible for many of the rock carvings that you can now see on Mount Beishan. The Buddhist monk, Zhao Zhifeng, worked on the carvings on Mount Baoding. He spent 70 years etching various carvings on the rock caves.

The Dazu Rock Carvings have been listed as one of the major UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world. It was in the year 1999 that the rock carvings were designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
