Copper Buddhist Sculpture

Copper Buddhist sculpture goes back a long time in history. History is splattered with famous, exquisite and antique copper Buddha figures. Some of the noted ones are:

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara from Sri Lanka, 8th - 9th century, was made of copper alloy. The voluptuous form and S-shaped curve of this Avalokiteshvara are comparable to features found in Buddhist sculpture created in peninsular Thailand when it was controlled by the maritime empire of Shrivijaya, suggesting close Southeast Asian interactions. The image’s small size indicates that it was intended for personal devotion.

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara originating in Nepal during transitional period (880-1200), late 10th - early 11th century is carved out of gilt copper with inlays of semiprecious stones. Avalokiteshvara is one of the earliest extant examples showing the use of semiprecious stone inlays to decorate a sculpture. Although only a few stones still remain, originally all the circular depressions in the jewelry were studded with multicolored stones.

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara which can be traced back to Western Tibet; 1543, is a Buddhist sculpture made of copper alloy. As a result of the teacher’s great spirituality, the statue represents him as Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion

Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara in the form of Amoghapasha Lokeshvara, Nepal, Late Malla period (1383-1769), 16th - 17th century, done in gilt copper, presents Avalokiteshvara in the form of “All-seeing Lord of the Infallible Noose” (Amoghapasha Lokeshvara), identified by the rope held in his bottom hand. Bodhisattva Maitreya, Thailand, Buriram Province, Prakhon Chai, 8th century is made of copper alloy with inlays of silver and black stone.

The scanty clothing, long matted hair, and lack of jewelry indicate that this image represents Maitreya as a bodhisattva-ascetic.

The combination of monastic robes, pendant legs, and the gesture of teaching (vitarka mudra) of ketumati Matreya suggests that this sculpture represents Maitreya in his role as the earthly Buddha of the next age.
