David Evison

One of the eminent German sculptors, David Evison is associated with post modern and constructivist art form. David Evison, who was born of English parents in China, later on came to be known as one of the forerunners of Constructivist sculpture.

David Evison was born in 1944 and his parents were Methodist missionaries. Evison's family left China during Japanese invasion. He received his education at English schools and later on became a professor at Hochschule der Konste situated in Berlin. He was also an artist in residence in the famous Nanjing University.

David Evison became a distinguished name with Silken Thread, his first prominent work, which brought him to limelight. This work of art is now exhibited at City Hall of Busan. David Evison along with other sculptors from Germany and various other countries were invited to Korea for an art exhibition. The delegates from Korea saw Evison's work at his studio in Berlin and was highly impressed with his marvelous creations with lead and wood.

David Evison was invited to the Korean city where he worked on his famous project Silken Thread. The City Hall of Busan at that time was planning for a sculpture park at an international stadium. Evison made the sculpture in August 2002 and took only ten days to complete the work. He was helped by the professional technicians at San Jin Steel Works. Evison was also aided by an engineer who made the sketches on his computer. This painting was based on David Evison's sculpture. Specialists undertook the responsibility of bending from the sketches. Finally rolled tubes were used to fit in the sections with the help of ratchets, hydraulic jacks and heat. Some changes were made regarding the proportion and the length, though the work of art differed little from the original miniature version.
David Evison mentioned in several interviews later that this project gave him a sense of satisfaction and he was able to achieve what he exactly intended.

David Evison's Silken Thread was inspired by the Greek sculptures. The artist admired the way the Greek sculptors used the color black in their art and carved human figurines, snakes and other animals. The baroque art of South Germany and Bohemia also greatly inspired Evison. Much of Evison's work also have resemblance with the Gothic art. The traditional Chinese architecture also left a deep impact on him.

David Evison became renowned with his post modern and abstract sculptures. He blended contrasting ideas for his sculptures. The characteristic features of Greek art namely using square and round, bottom against top, intermingling of curve and straight are noticed in Evison's work of art.
