David Smith, one of the eminent American Abstract Expressionist sculptors is known for his abstract steel geometric sculptures. David Smith, born on 9th March 1906, is a prominent name in Expressionist movement.
David Smith received his education from Ohio University and University of Notre Dame. In 1927, Smith became a part of Art Students League in New York. At this point of time he came across the impressive works of Picasso, Kandinsky, Mondrian which left a deep impact on him. His association with the Russian Constructivists changed the course of his life. He entered into good terms with Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning and Jan Matulka, which turned out to be fruitful.
Picasso and Julio Gonzalez's sculptures influenced David Smith to a great extent. Smith engaged himself in constructing different compositions with steel scrap materials. In 1929 Smith was conferred the Logan of Medal of the Arts.

Smith settled down permanently at Bolton Landing in 1940, and the establishment of Terminal Iron Works Studio helped him to carry on with his work and this time he was inclined towards creation of large welded sculptures.
However the scenario completely changed after the Second World War. There was shortage of metal and other scrap material. Besides the craze for Abstract Arts was also declining. Smith at this time turned his attention towards portrayal of landscapes and also Cubist Abstractionist movement. Smith's visual studies of Cubic sculptures was revealed in the series of pictographs that came to limelight in the year 1960.

David Smith received several honors and awards for his impressive work of arts. In 1950, he was honored with a fellowship by Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The fellowship helped him greatly do away with his financial problems and encouraged him to indulge in his sculptures.
A retrospective on David Smith was organized in the year 1950 by Museum of Modern Art in New York City. The retrospective exhibited his work of art dating from the year 1932. The famous sculptor was invited by the Italian government for creation of two works of art for their festivals. He carried with his work at a welding studio, offered by the government. David Smith created Voltri Series, a series of 27 sculptures which was completed in 30 days.
Cubi XXVIII and Pillars of Sundays are the two most prominent of his works. David Smith, one of the famous sculptors died in 1965 in a car crash.
