Julio González, the Cubist painter and the famous sculptor, is a renowned name in Spanish Abstract Art. Julio González born on 21st September, 1876, in Barcelona was a pioneer in the field of Spanish Abstract Art.
Julio González in the initial years worked as an apprentice to his elder brother Joan in a metal smith workshop, which belonged to their father. Both González and his brother nurtured an interest for art and sculpture. They were associated with Escuela de Bellas Artes where they took classes in the evening. In the 1890s a profound change came in Julio González's life and career. Since 1980, González started visiting Els Quartre Gats, a famous cafe in Barcelona. It is in this cafe he met the eminent artist Pablo Picasso, who influenced him greatly. Later on in 1900, left his homeland in Spain and settled in Paris.
In Paris, he came in contact with many prominent artists, like Juan Gris, Pablo Gargallo and Max Jacob. All three of them belonged to the Spanish circle of Montmartre. He worked at Renault Factory situated at Boulogne Billancourt, where he learned that new and innovative work of art can be created with welding different metals.
This became his source of inspiration and he used this technique for his artistic sculptures.Julio González's association with Picasso in 1920 turned out to be highly fruitful for his career. He also worked with Picasso and offered assistance in carving out sculptures with iron. He also played a vital role in Picasso's extensive researches on analytic Cubism. He further exhibited the art of making sculptures with oxy fuel welding and cutting in 1927 and 1928. Julio González worked with Picasso for four years; from 1928 to 1932. Julio González was the first and the only artist who shared a Picasso's personal art. His prolong association with Picasso, helped him to change his styles He started using iron instead of bronze for his marvelous sculptures.

Julio González's contribution to World Fair in Paris in 1937 deserves special mention. He hosted the Spanish Pavilion at the fair. He also played a vital role in Abstract Art and Cubism, which brought a revolution to the modern art form. Julio González's sculptures are exhibited in various museums including Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia situated in Madrid, Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya located in Barcelona, and Center Georges Pompidou in Paris. This eminent artist passed away in the year 1942.
