Famous all over the world for his notable sculptures and art work, Michaelangelo was born on 6th March 1475 in Italy. He was one of the most prominent figures of the Italian Renaissance and introduced newer styles of figure sketch and sculpture in Europe. Michaelangelo was born in Arezzo, in Caprese, Tuscany. Revered as one of the greatest sculptors in the world, Michaelangelo is famous for his construction of David. His works on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel also deserve a special mention.

Michaelangelo and his David
After a brief period of parting, Michaelangelo came back to Florence around 1499. by that time Savonarola had already fallen from power. During this time Michaelangelo was requested by the Guild of Woo to complete an unfinished task left by Agostino di Duccio. Agostino wanted to build a giant and magnificient statue of the angel David.
Michaelangelo was given the task of building the colossal statue of David as the symbol of Florence. In order to create his David Michaelangelo used the marbles from the Carrara quarries. Michaelangelo invested five years of patient sculpting technique and aesthetic finesse to construct hid David.

Michaelangelo's other sculptures
Michaelangelo was already becoming famous in major parts of Europe and Italy for his supreme art work and sculptures. In 1505, the then Pope of the Vatican called wanted him to build the Pope's tomb. On this tomb one can find the ever famous statue of Moses. However, Michaelangelo himself did not consider this as one of his best created sculptures.
In 1513, Pope Leo X wanted Michaelangelo to rebuild the incomplete facade of San Lorenzo Basilica in Florence. Michaelangelo never took up the protect, but the incomplete sculptures left in the basilica are the greatest proof of the man's sculptural genius. Michaelangelo also played an important role in designing the dome of St. Peter's Basilica.
