Types of Sculpture

A sculpture is known to be a 3 dimensional artwork that’s brought into life due to the shaping of any tough or moldable plastic material. The materials used for making sculpture are not confined to the usage of stone, metal or wood. Some types of sculptures are known to be created directly through carvings while few others are created made by assembling, building up and putting them into fire, few other are created by welding, molding or by casting. Sculptors are known to have created works of sculptures which remained for ever as they are made of expensive materials like those of bronze and stone. Out of the stone materials the prominently used materials are marble, limestone, porphyry and granite.

Rarely few sculptures were made of precious materials like those of gold, jade, silver, and ivory. The materials like oak, buxus, lime, and terracotta, and ceramics, zinc were used as less expensive materials for making sculptures. The various types of sculpture differ from one another not only in style but also in the materials used for their making.

Varied types of sculpture were utilized in separate regions in Asia and these sculptures were often based on the religious influences and especially on Hinduism and Buddhism. The sculptures of Thailand were exclusively based on Buddha images to a great extent. India being one major treasure house of sculpted images like those of the rock cave sculptures in the Ajanta and Ellora caves. The Gandhara School of sculptures is one of the most renowned schools of art dating back to the ancient era reflects a great amount of Greek and Persian influence. Every part of the world since time immemorial has developed its own style of sculpting images and those influences have carried forward to the recent generations. The types of sculpture in reference to the Buddhist sculpture is known to represent 3 popular types of sculptures namely bust, miniature figure and statue.
The bust is known to be the representation of the upper portion of the human body. This representation is mostly done through the mediums of paintings, drawings, engravings and sculptures etc. Numerous antique shops and shops specializing in ancient antiques also tend to feature the Bust types of sculptures. The Bust types of sculptures represent the chest, shoulders and head of a person. The Bust form sculptures are created as per the liking of the individual sculptors. In most cases the durable materials like those of marble etc. The miniature figure form sculpture is also known by the name of miniature or mini. These are mostly small figurines which are usually put to use for making the miniature war game figurines like those of the Heroclix, Mage Knight, and Warhammer.
These mini figurines are mostly used by the kids to play the roles of the various war characters and few such miniatures which are wonderfully sculpted are also taken up by many as collectibles.

A statue is known to be a sculpture which depicts an entity which is generally a person. The statues can also depict an event, animal or even an object other than a person. The key objective of the statues is representation of a person, event or an object etc. A small statue is known to be a statuette and in fact the head is known as the statue while the portions of shoulder are known as the bust. The statues mostly serve the purpose of commemorating any specific historical event including the life of any prominent personality.
